Hydroplaning Accidents in Florida: What Drivers Need to Know

According to the National Weather Service, approximately 60-70% of Florida’s yearly rainfall happens during the wet season.

The influx of rain adds dangerous components to the roadway, and one that can pop up without warning is hydroplaning.

This happens when your car’s tires lose contact with the road and slide on a thin layer of water.

In a matter of seconds, you can lose control of your car.

Hydroplaning is relatively common in the Sunshine State as frequent downpours, wet roads, and high speeds increase the risk.

In this blog, we cover:

  • The causes of hydroplaning
  • Four ways to reduce your risk
  • What to do after a hydroplaning accident

Three Common Causes of Hydroplaning

Hydroplaning typically occurs when:

  • There’s too much water on the road, which causes your tires to lose contact with the road’s surface.
  • The tire tread is too worn to push water away effectively.
  • High speeds reduce traction and increase the likelihood of skidding.

When you think of hydroplaning, you likely think of conditions where there is excessive water on the roadway. But even as little as 1/10 of an inch of water can cause hydroplaning.

Four Ways to Reduce Your Risk

Though you can’t completely avoid hydroplaning while driving, you can reduce your risk. Here are four ways to do that:

  1. Reduce your speed: Driving 5–10 mph below the speed limit during heavy rain can make a difference.
  2. Check your tire pressure and tread: Proper tread depth and proper inflation are critical for grip.
  3. Stay steady: Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns, as they increase your risk of losing control.
  4. Stay in line with the car in front of you: This can help your tires grip where water has already been pushed away.

What to do if You’re in a Hydroplaning Accident

If you’ve been injured in a hydroplaning accident, we suggest you do the following:

  • Seek medical attention immediately.
  • Document the scene, including road conditions and vehicle damage.
  • Get witness statements if possible.
  • Contact a personal injury attorney who understands Florida’s laws and weather-related accident claims.
