Firework Safety 101

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) 2023 Fireworks Annual Report, fireworks caused around 9,700 injuries in hospital emergency departments.

When Independence Day or New Years Eve draw near and excitement builds, fireworks safety is in focus.

While fireworks are fun, they can be dangerous, and as a personal injury lawyer in Tampa, we want to help you and your family safely celebrate this festive holiday.

5 Firework Safety Tips

Fireworks are explosives that can cause severe injuries if not handled properly.

Here are five fireworks safety tips to consider:

Adhere to local laws

Every state has its fireworks regulations. For instance, in Florida, residents can legally light fireworks on three days during the year: the Fourth of July, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.

However, there are also local restrictions to consider. Familiarize yourself with the laws in your area before setting off fireworks.

Supervision

Never leave children unattended with fireworks or handle them. Always supervise children to mitigate injury risks.

Buy from trusted vendors

When purchasing fireworks, make sure the vendor is licensed and reputable.

Do not use homemade or illegal fireworks, as they likely violate safety standards.

Keep your distance

When setting off fireworks, keep a safe distance from people, buildings, and flammable objects.

It’s best to light them in an open area.

Be mindful of pets

PetAmberAlert found that animal control officials across the United States report a 30 – 60% increase in lost pets each year between July 4 – 6.

That said, before the night’s festivities, do your best to keep your pets inside and make sure your dog has its collar and ID tags on in case it does run away.

What do you do if someone gets injured by fireworks?

You may follow these five tips to a “T,” but accidents happen.

If, by chance, fireworks injure someone, they should seek medical attention immediately.

Burns can be cooled with water, but avoid ice or creams, which can create more damage.

Cover eye injuries with a clean cloth. Do not rub the eye and get help.

Seek the support of a personal injury lawyer for more severe injuries or if you believe there was something wrong with the fireworks.
